How far should a needle stick out when tattooing?

Make sure you hold down the armature bar so that you are adjusting the tip at the point where the needle is in its down position. The tip of the needle should not be sticking out anymore than 2mm and no less than 1mm. Keep in mind that every person's skin type is different and there is no exact measure. The tip of the needle should not be sticking out anymore than 2mm and no less than 1mm. If during your tattoo there are excessive amounts of blood, it is obviously going in too deep This question comes up quite often in conversations. It is hard to explain, unless you can see the breakdown of all the different layers. The above picture lays it out very clear and helps answer that question. The skin has a total of 3 layers: Epidermis (composed of 5 sub-layers), Dermis, and Subcutaneous tissue. The tattoo needle and ink should penetrate into the Dermis layer. If the depth is too shallow, the tattoo ink will “bleed out”. This is due to the fact that the Epidermis layer is constantly growing outwards which would take any ink that was deposited into that layer with it. If the depth is too deep it will cause unnecessary pain and run the risk of infection. The Dermis layer of skin is between 1mm and 2mm into the skin. The tattoo needles and machine are adjusted accordingly. Once the tattoo needles have been set and adjusted the tip of the needle should not be sticking out anymore than 2mm and no less than 1mm.All you need to do is push the a-bar down so the needles are fully extended & then adjust the tip so that just 1-2mm of needle is sticking out. Now you just tattoo up to the depth of the tip. This is called riding the tube. This method is the best way of making sure you dont go too deep although differenet body parts need less depth (wrists, neck etc) As you become more experienced & learn to feel the correct depth you can have more of the needle sticking out. However you will now need to make sure you only tatt to the correct depth & cant rely on the tube to stop you. This is a much cleaner method as you generally wont get a large blot of ink on the skin so you can see the needle & where you are going but i dont advise just yet. To get the correct length of needle i used to line it up next to a tape measure. Over time you will learn what the correct depth looks like so wont need to measure it. Hopefully that helps

How deep do you go when tattooing?

Everyone's skin is different. Generally speaking, a tattoo needle needs to penetrate between 1mm and 2mm into the skin, beyond the 5 layers of epidermis and into the dermis layer. Anything deeper can lead to infection.Skin has a total of 3 layers: Epidermis (composed of 5 sublayers), Dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The tattoo needle depth should penetrate into the Dermis layer. If the depth is too shallow, it will only penetrate into the epidermis sub layers and the ink will “bleed out” as the tattoo heals.Skin has a total of 3 layers: Epidermis (composed of 5 sublayers), Dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The tattoo needle depth should penetrate into the Dermis layer. If the depth is too shallow, it will only penetrate into the epidermis sub layers and the ink will “bleed out” as the tattoo heals. This is because the 5 sub layers of the Epidermis is constantly growing outward to the top, any ink deposited will just be shed back out. If the depth is too deep, you will be causing unnecessary pain to your client and run the risk of infection. The dermis layer of skin is between 1mm and 2mm into the skin. So when you are adjusting the tattoo machine, you will have to adjust within this parameter. With the needle, grip and proper tip (e.g. 3RL needle will go with a 3RT tip) on the tattoo machine, adjust the depth by adjusting the depth of the tip. Make sure you hold down the armature bar so that you are adjusting the tip at the point where the needle is in its down position. The tip of the needle should not be sticking out anymore than 2mm and no less than 1mm. Keep in mind that every person’s skin type is different and there is no exact measure. If during your tattoo there are excessive amounts of blood, it is obviously going in too deep. Practicing on fruit is a good method before trying on human skin. If the fruit is being badly damaged while you are puncturing the skin, the depth is going in too deep.

How far should needle stick out of tube?

A tattoo needle needs to stick out of the machine tube about o.8 mm to 1.6 mm. These measurements will vary from person to person, as everyone's body is different. Your needle and tube need to match; if you are using a three-needle , you must also use a three-needle tube. There is a lot of information you need to learn when learning how to tattoo. You will need to understand how to sanitize your equipment and workplace to keep your clients and yourself healthy, you will need to have a complete understanding of how your tattoo machine works and how to set it up, you will need to know about all of the various types of needles and how to they apply to the type of tattoo you are doing, how to properly transfer a stencil, and how to properly bandage a tattoo before you send a client of their way; not to mention you will need to learn the process of tattooing!

I think this goes without saying, but these lessons are not meant to replace the knowledge you receive from hands-on training through a tattoo apprenticeship. It is highly recommended that you learn this material to use as a foundation for your apprenticeship, and not as a means for teaching yourself how to tattoo.

And if you do have no intention of going through an apprenticeship, then thoroughly study this information and practice on inanimate objects many times before ever putting needle to skin. Your knowledge of sanitation and the tattoo process will be what protect your clients and yourself from mutilated limbs or life-threatening diseases.
