I’m here to let you in on a little known fact: permanent makeup can give you the transformative improvement you’re looking for!

Let’s take a moment for some crude honesty here: we’re all aging and we haven’t found a cure yet. It’s astounding the amount of money we spend yearly on facial creams with snail slime or bottled baby tears and what do we have to show for it?
Others take the brave plunge to have surgery which comes with many risks and a lot of downtime (not to mention the big ol’ dent it makes in your savings).

I’m going to show you some examples of how microblading and permanent makeup have been very effective in making clients look years younger.

Here is a before and after picture of someone who had microblading. This client here had eyebrows that gave her a slightly sad looking expression. The highest point in the brows was quite near the centre with the tails sloping in a  downwards direction.

I see this occur quite often and it’s just the way the brow hairs have grown. Most people don’t know why their facial expression looks sad or what they can do about it. In the after picture you can see how we placed the highest point (arches) slightly further away from the centre and the tails taper down more preferably. By making such a small change, we can actually improve and enhance someone’s natural facial expressions!

Notice how her new brow shape has really opened up her eyes, making her look years younger.

Here we have a client with a similar issue. The highest points are too close to the centre with the tails sloping in a downwards direction. We placed the arches about 2/3 of the way down with the direction of the strokes going up towards to arches first before tapering down in the tails.

My client said she felt like she looked 5 years younger! It really made her look happier and that made her feel happier.

So if you want to look years younger without going under the knife or having injections, give semi permanent makeup a good consideration.

It’s important to also go to an artist that has an understanding of facial contours and how the eyebrow can be positioned to be more favourable. It always amazes me how minor changes to the shape of someone’s eyebrows can make a life changing experience in how people perceive themselves.

And at the end of the day, the most important thing is really how you feel about yourself. There’s nothing more satisfying to me than seeing how eyebrow enhancing treatments can boost someone’s confidence and happiness.

Why should you choose PermaBella?

Why should you choose us?
There are quite a few technicians in our local area of Edinburgh that provide (semi) permanent makeup treatments. For most people, choosing a permanent makeup artist is a decision not taken lightly. And this is a good thing! I wanted to give you some hopefully helpful information as to what makes PermaBella different from other artists.
Our experience, expertise, skill, technique, education and artistry are just a few examples of what sets us apart. I see it as my privilege and duty to help educate potential clients about permanent makeup and everything that’s involved.

1. What sets us apart more than anything, is that my main focus is on restoring or boosting your confidence. I want you to be ecstatic and excited about your new brows. We do this by either enhancing your brows by giving more definition and colour, or by restoring them by replacing the hairs lost over the years. So many of us lose a lot of eyebrow hairs as we age, and this is an unfortunate truth which must be said. By expertly and precisely placing hair strokes into the brow area, we are able to replace the hairs you’ve perhaps lost and we can recreate how they used to look. The beauty of this treatment is that you can walk out of our clinic feeling and looking like yourself again!

2. We have perfected our skills and expertise to give you the best treatment and experience possible.
Over the years, we have done extensive training with leading experts in the industry. We practice our skills on a daily basis and continue to learn and perfect what we do. Permanent makeup is an artistic process and we approach it as artists.
To do a GREAT job, you need to have knowledge of anatomy and skin. You need to have a steady hand. But most of all, you need to understand facial features and what shape will suit the client. Performing this treatment is not as simple as just putting some pigment in the brows!
An example: The shape of the desired eyebrows absolutely needs to be drawn on first before having a microblading treatment. Do not let anyone touch your face without showing you what the shape of your eyebrows will be before having your treatment! I spend about 20-30 minutes mapping out the brows and discussing with my client the desired shape. This is the most important part of the process because if this isn’t right, the end result will not be good! Perfect symmetry isn’t possible, but we do try to aim for it.

3. We are great, not just because we are talented artists but because we continue to develop our skills. Anyone who claims to be the best but doesn’t want to continue learning will be set in their ways. No one is ever done learning and because permanent makeup is an artistic process, you can never be finished with improving.
An example: To make eyebrows look natural and realistic, an artist should know how to use their blade or needles to create life-like hair strokes. They are not meant to be straight lines going from the bottom to the top of the eyebrows. They are also not meant to be put in too close together. If it looks like there are barely any gaps between the hair strokes, the pigment will bleed together in the skin and once healed, you will end up with one big filled in eyebrow. It’s not about how it looks when it’s just been done, but how it looks once it’s healed. I have seen artists insist that they know best even though they continue to give undesirable results. Always choose an artist who’s work you like and can give you endless amount of proof that they are amazing! I spend a lot of time looking at other artists’ work and try to emulate those who’s work I admire. I still practice my techniques and try to improve as much as I can.

4. You should be given all the information you need to make a good decision. Transparency is so important! That is why I spend so much time educating our clients about our treatments and everything that’s involved. I always say, by the time you’re lying down on the bed you are reassured and confident that you’re going to get exactly what you want.
During consultations, I spend a lot of time explaining the treatment from the pigments we use, to mapping out the shape of the brows, to your aftercare advice.
I have heard horror stories where people were shown into the treatment room and not shown (or even asked about) what shape they would get. They had no choice in pigment colour and weren’t even told how to look after their eyebrows!

5. Your happiness is our priority! I know everybody says that but why is it so important in this case? You are my walking advertisement. When you walk down the street, visit friends or go to work I want everyone to think or say ‘’oh my god, her brows look amazing!’’ and ask you for our phone number.
I want you to be excited about your eyebrows and how confident and happy they will make you feel. There is no greater compliment than a recommendation!
But above all this, I do this work because I get so excited and happy when I know I’ve made someone feel amazing about themselves. Your happiness is my happiness.

If I can leave you with some advice it would be this: choose your permanent makeup artist wisely! You are getting a (semi) permanent tattoo in your face. Do not go for the discount because you think it will save you some cash. About 40% of my work is correction work which means I fix a lot of badly done (semi) permanent treatments. Sometimes it can be fixed and sometimes it cannot.
Just because someone offers a service of treatment, it does not mean they are good at it!

About Me

Comments are off

In my line of work, I believe it all starts with building a trust relationship with my clients. It is a privilege for me to do what I do and I’m highly aware of the responsibility I have. I thought I would give some hopefully interesting information about my background and myself so you know a little bit more about who is potentially doing your treatment.

My name is Elisa Falkenburg and not many of you know that I’m actually from The Netherlands! Although you could probably guess I’m not british from my name. I’m from a small town not far from Amsterdam and I moved to Edinburgh when I was 24. I grew up mainly in the Netherlands, but I also spent some time with my family in the USA when I was young. Hence, the accent! I’ve lost most of the American twang, though most people still ask me ‘’are you Canadian or something’’?

Back home, I was studying to be a nurse and had completed 4 years of my studies before I decided it wasn’t for me. I had done 4 placements in different medical settings, but I found no happiness in what I was doing. I tried to push myself to at least finish my degree but I only became more resentful. One day, a patient threatened to ‘’send me to a better place’’ and I decided that was the last straw. I immediately left and made the decision to quit my studies.

To give myself something to do, I started working in a waxing salon. I really enjoyed my work and I loved that I could go home and leave it at the door. I looked into becoming a beauty therapist but there was another issue nagging at me. I was keen to move away from the Netherlands and explore the world a bit more. I was on the brink of moving to Canada when I was declined a visa and chose to move to the UK instead. Edinburgh seemed like a good choice as I had never been there before and some friends had said it was amazing! Why not, right?!

I’ve always had a mentality that nothing can stop you from doing something, except yourself. So I packed two suitcases and moved into a student house on Grange Road with people I’d only met on Skype once. I studies spa and beauty therapy at Mary Reid International Spa Academy so I could qualify with an internationally recognized diploma. My plan was to do this 1 year course and then spread my wings to explore the world! It was definitely not my plan to meet someone and settle down in Edinburgh. But, as many of us know, love ruins a lot of things. I’m only kidding (am I?).

After my beauty studies, I worked in one of the highest regarded beauty salons to gain the best experience possible. Yet my heart was not content and I wanted more of a challenge. I’ll just mention here that since a very young age I’ve had a passion for art, drawing and painting. Both my parents are artists and I like to think I inherited their love for the arts.
One day a client told me about her friend who was having her eyebrows tattooed. An image of scary, blocked in brows come to mind and I thought ‘’that sounds like a really bad decision’’. But, I was intrigued and I did a some research. It wasn’t hard to find amazing artists that showed how beautiful permanent makeup can be! Immediately I knew this is what I wanted to do. I could combine my passion for art, anatomy and the beauty industry!

I invested in my future and did a course in permanent makeup with Nouveau Contour, the highest regarded institution in (semi)permanent cosmetics in the UK. I chose them because I wanted the best training possible so I could provide the best treatments and service to my potential clients. There’s no point in doing something half-assed! I either fully commit or don’t bother at all.

From the moment I started with permanent makeup, I finally felt like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing. From my experience as a nurse, I knew just how important it would be to reassure my clients and I place a lot of emphasis on the consultation element of my treatments. There’s nothing worse than being ushered through a treatment as quick as possible because there are 10 others in the waiting room.
I’ve been honing my skills ever since and I find an endless hunger in myself to continue this journey.

A while ago I was following another permanent makeup artist on Instagram and became aware of a new and revolutionary treatment on the market: Fibroblast skin tightening. Once again, I was so intrigued by this procedure and did some research on it. After speaking to a lot of different people in the industry, I took the leap and did my training with PlasmaPen by Louise Walsh International. Also again, I wanted the best training possible so that I was delivering the highest quality treatments to my clients. Nothing but the best for you! With Fibroblast, I realised there are a lot of unsafe devices and training companies that don’t have the clients’ best interest at heart. This is why I chose PlasmaPen but I’ll go into it more deeply in another blog post.
I’m a very results-driven person and I’m also quite sceptical by nature. That’s why I’m so pleased with how this treatment is turning out and the amazing results I’ve seen so far!

Other fun-facts about me: I have two cats, who are like my baby’s. Another great joy in my life is singing. I sing in a choir with great passion and commitment!

At this point, I’m working very hard to build my business and gain a good reputation within my line of work. I love my work and I feel very lucky to be able to do what I love. Not everyone discovers what their passion is or can even make a living from them. I also feel very honoured that my clients feel safe and are happy to put their brows and faces in my hands!

Thank you for being a part of my journey and I hope to see you soon in the salon! X Elisa

Microblading has gained incredible popularity in recent years as it enhances your facial features in a beautiful, natural looking way. Some people have never had a great eyebrow shape, some people overplucked when they were younger and some just want to improve their existing shape.

Fabulous brows are the must-haves and for good reason! Your eyebrows are essential to your face and can greatly impact your expression.

Choosing the right microblading artist can be very challenging. Most people don’t know where to start and will usually go by a recommendation from a friend. Even then, it can be tricky. Here are some tips to choosing the right microblading artist for you:

  • Do I like their work?
  • What do their reviews say?
  • Do they offer a free consultation?
  • Do I feel reassured and excited after speaking to the technician?
  • Where did they qualify and can they give proof of qualification?

Nowadays, there are a huge amount of microblading artists and clinics, all trying to out-compete each other. The market also ranges quite a bit when it comes to the prices that each salon or clinic charges. So why is there such a difference in prices? And how are you supposed to know what ‘’the right’’ price is?

Whatever price is being asked, a good business will take into account how much it costs for them to perform the treatment, how much time is needed and also how high the standard of treatment is with them.

Sometimes I get asked ‘’why are you so expensive? I can get a Voucher online for £80 down the street’’. You have to ask yourself, why is it so much cheaper? Usually it will be because they are just starting out, need to build their portfolio or are still in training.

Consider this: what do I think is a reasonable price for having someone tattoo my face?

A shockingly large part of my work is spent correcting previously done work by other technicians where a client thought they could get a cheap deal. So they end up spending much more than they were prepared for and in some cases, we cannot help fix their eyebrows.
The picture shows an example of where we were fortunately able to correct previously done work by another artist.

If you take away anything from this article, let it be this:

  1. Do your research and choose your artist wisely. Speak to a few different ones until you are happy with your choice.
  2. Good brows aren’t cheap and cheap brows aren’t good.

What are the benefits of Plasma Fibroblast skin tightening? How can this treatment help you?

Anyone that knows me, knows that I am a results driven technician. Whether it’s microblading, permanent makeup, fibroblast skin tightening or anything else for that matter I need to know that it does what it says on the box. I don’t make promises I can’t deliver on and I believe there is no point in deluding someone into thinking they’re gonna look 17 again cause that’s not gonna happen!

Also, if I don’t deliver on what I say then my reputation is out the window and my business will suffer.

I chose to add the Plasma Fibroblast Skin Tightening to my repertoire because I got really excited seeing the results other technicians were getting from this treatment.
So let’s go through what makes this treatment so amazing!
🎀  this treatment is completely non-surgical and non-invasive! No cutting of the skin, no injections and no chemicals going into the body.
🎀 there is very minimal downtime. Afterwards there can be some redness and swelling in the area treated, but all after-effects are temporary and last usually no more than 3-7 days. That compared to weeks or months (!) of downtime when you have surgical face lifting!
🎀 results are immediately visible (though the final result will be best visible 4-6 weeks after treatment), PERMANENT and are visible for 2-4 years.
🎀 we can treat any area of the face, neck and even a lot of areas on the body!
🎀 it removes excess skin but also rejuvenates the skin, making it look brighter and smoother!
🎀 it improves the appearance of scar tissue and stretch marks.
🎀 the more sessions you have, the better your results will be. You’re building on top of what you’ve already done, so any further sessions are to your benefit and increase the effects of the treatment.
🎀 this treatment is great for the quality of your skin as it boost those Fibroblast cells to make more collagen and elastin. In my opinion, this is better than Botox or fillers as these can mask the aging of the skin. We are actually slowing down the aging process with PlasmaPen Fibroblast treatments rather than hiding it!
🎀 this treatment is very safe and suitable for most people.

Have a look at some amazing results we have already achieved with this treatment!

Let’s start with the basics. What is it and what does it do?

We often refer to this treatment as Fibroblast, but fibroblasts are actually cells in the skin that produce collagen and elastin. Most of us are familiar with collagen and possibly even elastin but what do they do? They are responsible for the elasticity and plumpness of the skin. The younger you are, the more collagen and elastin your skin creates giving you nice, bouncy skin. As we age, our skin produces less of these meaning that our skin goes slacker and loses that smooth quality. Nowadays there are tons and tons of creams, ointments, herbs and teas that are supposed to help you produce more collagen and elastin. I’m gonna break that illusion right here and now for you: none of them work. No amount of products can battle against the inevitable fact that time and gravity are not on our side.

Now for the good news!

We live in a day and age where we can use technology and innovation to help us win this battle. Introducing Fibroblast Skin Tightening!
This treatment uses plasma technology to produce tiny plasma flashes over the skin. We place a grid of these plasma flashes in an area to contract the skin and remove excess skin cells. A chemical process occurs called ‘’sublimation’’ where the skin is evaporated at the surface level. The plasma flashes cause minor trauma to the skin, forcing the skin to go into hyper-production of collagen and elastin. This is what we want!

So to put it simply, these plasma flashes are doing two things: removing saggy, droopy skin at the surface and forcing the skin to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles by producing collagen and elastin. And the best part is, the results you get are PERMANENT!! WHAT?! Yep, that’s right. Let that one sink in, I’ll see you soon in the salon.
